I. The Ecuadorian paramos are invaded by rabbits, which are endemic to the area. These rabbits have a relatively small build, since at an altitude of 4000 metres, their development is restricted. The local cowboys of the region (Chagras) hunt the rabbits, using a very traditional form of hunting. The rabbits are an important food source for the Chagras and their families providing them with a very high source of protein.

II. The Chagra’s traditional hunting technique makes use of dogs rather than any weapon. The Chagras, who are on horseback, work together with the dogs to round up and catch the rabbits. There are many traditional customs linked to this activity:

  • The owner of the dog that catches the first rabbit hangs all the caught rabbits from his saddle.
  • At the end of the hunt the rabbits are shared equally amongst the hunters and participants.
  • The sharing is undertaken by the oldest member of the hunting team.
  • It is prohibited to count the rabbits before the end of the hunt (they say that it is bad luck).
  • The most experienced Chagra leads the hunt, giving orders to the rest of the riders in how to move together to catch the rabbits.

Important Points:

  • An important number of rabbits are hunted each time, on a bad day 30-40 and on a good day 50 – 60.
  • To accompany the hunt, it is important that you know how to horse back ride.
  • It is a tough experience, and takes place over 4000 metres above sea level.
  • We take oxygen with us in case anyone is affected by the altitude.
  • We provide the adequate horses and replacements (if necessary).
  • A delicious and nutritious gourmet lunch is provided and served in the middle of the paramo.
  • It is important to wear the appropriate warm and waterproof clothing, since the climate in these region is cold and there is always possibility of rain.
  • Ideally we leave no later than 6am and are back at the hacienda by 5pm.

On returning from this wonderful adventure, the hacienda awaits us with its fireplaces burning, and the opportunity to enjoy a hot bath and unforgettable food.
